CLIVETTE 1868-1931
MERTON CLIVETTE 1868-1931

An American Expressionist

"The spiritual truth of the moving form is a changing
mass of light, reflection, vibrating color - and life.
Now when a form is moving - like a fish, for example,
you cannot give the vibration of light on that form
by adhering to a line to produce the fish." Clivette

Clivette was active in the New York art scene of the 1920's, exhibiting widely in America and Europe. Born in Wisconsin and raised in Wyoming, he was witness to the last days of the American Frontier West. He became a famous acrobat and magician, performing on the Orpheum Circut in the 1890's. In the early 1900's he settled in Greenwhich Village, where he painted prolifically for the remaining thirty years of his life.
